Sacramento Martial Arts and Karate
My name is Imelda Melchor. I am a senior at West Campus High School. In the beginning of my senior year we were assigned a senior project as one of our graduation requirements. The purpose of the project is to help open a door to our future career. I wanted to do something fun, yet that has an important purpose. Therefore, I chose to focus it on anti-bullying. Why? I was bullied as a kid, and I am strong believer that no kid should go through bullying. I wanted to show kids a different way to deal with bullying. I started out with an idea, and that idea led me onto this very website. I've work with children in 4th-6th grade for about 4 years now, so I wanted to do something relating to children. When I read about Verbal Judo, I immediately called our instructor Mr. Oliver to be my mentor. Within a day, he called me more than willing to be my mentor.
I started attending martial art classes back in November, November 16th to be exact :). On the very first day of class, we coincidentally spoke about Verbal Judo. I took some notes and started thinking about what exactly I was going to present. I spoke to Mr. Oliver and he introduced me one of the presentations he does at local elementary schools. As soon as he did that, I knew exactly what I was going to do. I wrote my letter of intent & it got approved by my English teacher, and I began by attending classes two days a week.
I am almost done with my project, and planning on presenting the week of April 19. The only thing holding me back is my stage fright, but I know I must get over that to make a difference in these children's lives.
I am so thankful that Mr. Oliver has given me the opportunity to work on my project with him.
I can't wait to continue on with my martial arts training.
