Our Covid Response

Adult Martial Arts

Preventing Illness is Self-Defense

As Zen Martial Arts transitions into opening back up to the public, we are taking steps to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to make sure that you feel comfortable in your training.

Teaching and training in the martial arts is our love and passion, but so is self-defense--and staying healthy is a huge part of self-defense.

In order to keep our dojo safe, clean, and welcoming to new students, we ask that all parents, students, and instructors to please review our response steps to Covid-19 below.

Our Response Plan to Covid-19

  • Outdoor Classes

All classes are currently being held at East Portal Park where the fresh air and sunlight allows for a more Covid safe environment.

  • Limited Class Size

Class sizes are limited to 15 students in most age-groups. Students must have their space reserved for class ahead of time using our online scheduling system.

  • Face Coverings Required

All staff and assistant instructors will wear face coverings while teaching. Students and guests must wear coverings if they are going to train or remain near the training area. We have extra disposable face masks if needed, but we recommend that you bring your own for comfort.

  • Modified No-Contact Curriculum

We have modified our curriculum to focus on training that does not require contact. This provides us a unique opportunity to focus on kata, form, stances, and concentration. There will be no sparring or grappling until new guidelines are provided by local health agencies.

  • Shared Equipment Disinfected

Any shared equipment that is used in class will be immediately disinfected after class before it is used by any other student or instructor.

  • Students practice social distancing

Students are encouraged stand and stay at least 6-feet away from their classmates and instructors.

  • Hand Sanitizer Stations

We have hand-sanitizer on hand at the park for you to before, during, or after class as needed.

  • Bring your Own Water Bottle

Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles as the regular park drinking fountain should not be used.

  • Greeting with a Bow

In the martial arts, we have a long-standing tradition of greeting each-other with a bow. We will keep this tradition while eliminating hand-shakes and high-fives, reducing our amount of contact.
