Our Covid Response

Adult Martial Arts

Preventing Illness is Self-Defense

As Zen Martial Arts transitions into opening back up to the public, we are taking steps to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to make sure that you feel comfortable in our usual clean and friendly environment.

Teaching and training in the martial arts is our love and passion, but so is self-defense--and staying healthy is a huge part of self-defense.

In order to keep our dojo safe, clean, and welcoming to new students, we ask that all parents, students, and instructors to please review our response steps to Covid-19 below.

Our Response Plan to Covid-19

  • Limited Class Size

Class sizes are limited to 15 students in most age-groups. Students must have their space reserved for class ahead of time using our online scheduling system.

  • Efficient Drop-off and Pick-Up

Parents are encouraged to drop children off when possible as seating is limited inside the dojo. Students should arrive in their training uniform without needing to change clothes before or after training.

  • Face Coverings Required

All staff and assistant instructors will wear face coverings while in the dojo. Students and guests must wear coverings if they are going to train or remain inside the dojo. We have extra disposable face masks if needed, but we recommend that you bring your own for comfort.

  • One-Way Foot Traffic

Parents and students are asked to enter the school from the rear entrance by walking through the side ally. In the lounge area, they will be temperature screened and can then move directly into the bathroom to wash or sanitize their hands. Students can then enter the main training area, put their shoes and socks in the cubby, and then proceed to the training floor. After class, students should retrieve their shoes and exit the dojo trough the front entrance.

  • Health Screenings are performed upon entry

Everyone that enters the dojo will get screened on entry with a touch-less thermometer. We will ask anyone with a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher to leave. Students that show signs of illness such as consistent coughing or sneezing will be asked to leave.

  • Modified No-Contact Curriculum

We have modified our curriculum to focus on training that does not require contact. This provides us a unique opportunity to focus on kata, form, stances, and concentration. There will be no sparring or grappling until new guidelines are provided by local health agencies.

  • Purified Air Filtration System

Our commercial air cleaner and purifier continually refreshes our training room air.

  • Regular Surface Cleanings

In between classes, staff and assistants will disinfect surfaces throughout the dojo, including handles, door knobs, benches, and the training floor.

  • Shared Equipment Disinfected

Any shared equipment that is used in class will be immediately disinfected after class before it is used by any other student or instructor.

  • Students practice social distancing

Floor space is clearly marked, making it easy for students to know where to stand to stay at least 6-feet away from their classmates and instructors.

  • Hand Sanitizer Stations

We have provided extra hand-sanitizer stations mounted near all entrances and on the training floor. This is in addition to our two bathrooms equipped with soap and water.

  • Bring your Own Water Bottle

Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles as the drinking fountain will be off-limits to prevent a point of contact.

  • Greeting with a Bow

In the martial arts, we have a long-standing tradition of greeting each-other with a bow. We will keep this tradition while eliminating hand-shakes and high-fives, reducing our amount of contact.

  • Optional Outdoor Training

Depending on class sizes, some adults and young adults may have the option of training outside in the dojo back patio area. Face coverings are optional when outdoors. Please wear shoes when outside.
