I recently finished “the Book of Five Rings” by Miyamoto Musashi recently and it was one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read. I’ve never really read a book surrounding philosophy, so at the beginning it was kind of hard to consume and understand. But over time, page after page I realized I was taking in the knowledge that Mushashi was giving me through this book. Here are some of my biggest takeaways,
- The concept of “The Way” to me is really up to interpretation but how I took it was, the “Way” is how you feel when acting in strategy. For example, like in sparring, what goes through my head when I spar is my way, and the “Way” is going to differ from person to person.
- To “become the enemy” was also a very interesting concept to me. When you think like your enemy you are able to understand how they think as well. Being able to put yourself in your enemy’s shoes you can think like them, in turn you can predict what actions they will do next.
These are the two biggest takeaways I got from the book. I can not recommend this enough, the book is short but packed dense with knowledge and wisdom. I recommend this to any martial artist, and to be honest, anyone that is interested in strategy and philosophy.
