Another night of blackout
The last big storm that whipped through Sacramento caused a lot of power outages. Fallen trees and limbs plus overhead power lines do not make for a good combination. We lost power for 2.5 days but in the grand scheme of things it was merely an inconvenience rather than a hardship. Don’t get me wrong–being without electricity for a few days sucks; we get so accustomed to everything just working when the switch is flipped that we rarely think about it, until there is a disruption.
Last night after karate class, I went home to our dark house after picking up some Chinese food (was craving Wor Wonton soup). My family were all staying with friends and family who had electric services. As I sat alone in the dark solitude enjoying my Chinese food, I closed my eyes for a moment and thought about how fortunate I am to have a home, food, family, friends…our dojo. So many others struggle, some (too many, I feel) living on the streets. I opened my eyes and continued in the blessings of the moment.
