The Project: 100 ACTS OF KINDNESS

Outline: Jane isna 10-year-old white belt. Her project is to get 10 of her friends and/or classmates at school to do 10 acts of kindness each; recording each act in log that she supplies them. Ten students doing 10 acts of kindness each, equals 100 acts of kindness! Jane and her mother will design their own kindness log–and Jane will have an experiential lesson in how to inspire others to take action.

Here’s a letter from me thatnJane is going to give to her teacher and friends:

Jane Smith is getting ready to test for her green belt in karate at my martial arts school, Zen Martial Arts.

As a part of her test, Jane was required to pick a project that would be beneficial to something or someone in our community.

Jane chose to do an acts of kindness project. She has committed herself to being a catalyst for 100 acts of kindness by her belt test day next month. Jane’s project is not to do the acts herself, but to practice leadership skills in a way that inspires 10 of her friends and/or classmates to do them.

If you have any questions about this program–or if you would like to participate yourself, please contact me. While Jane has declared that she’s going to achieve her goal of 100 acts of kindness, I have committed myself this year to the achievement of 100 complete projects that bring benefit to our community.

After Jane finishes her project, she posts this journal entry here on our Digital Dojo:

Post Title: 100 Acts of Kindness Project

I decided to do the 100 Acts of Kindness project for my Green-belt test because I thought it would be really fun, except that the 100 acts seemed like a lot to do. My mom and I designed a simple journal and I gave them to 20 people. My plan was that if half of them did them and returned the journals, I would meet my goal.

I am happy to report all but two of the journals were returned and my friends did more than 200 acts of kindness!!!

My favorite was from Sammy Hill: “I picked up the entire box of cereal my baby brother dumped on the floor–and I didn’t complain.”
